was 1-3 with an RBI.
Vegas was MVP for the South.
Moore was MVP for the North.
|
|
Second Game (Large Schools) North 12, South 8
For the South, Mykhel Lee (Grant)
was 2-3 including a 2B and an RBI; Jared James
(McClatchy) was 1-2 with 2 RBI; Lance Berringer (Oak
Ridge) was 2-3 with 2 RBI; Anthony Gonsolin (Vacaville
High) was 1-4 including a 2B with 1 RBI.

Kunkle (Yuba City
High) was MVP for the North.
Gonsolin
(Vacaville
High) was MVP for the South.

|

At the Large School Optimist Game, catcher Austin Hagarty (Woodcreek) of the North squad received a
timely throw from right fielder Logan James (Jesuit) and applied the tag on Jelanie Davie (Burbank)
of the South squad. In this composite image we see plate umpire Topo Padilla signalling the call,
while North pitcher Zach Oakley (Yuba City) returns to the mound.
|
|

Josh Pigg (Franklin) of the South smoked this pitch up the middle...
|
|

... where it struck pitcher Zach Oakley (Yuba City/North Team) in the back. While Oakley recovered
(above) the ball caromed straight to third baseman Louis Mejia (Jesuit) who alertly fired to home
to nail the runner advancing on the play. Oakley was alright and returned to the mound.
|
|

Anthony Gonsolin (Vacaville High) of the South team
made several impressive plays tonight at shortstop,
including this one.
|

Despite not being selected this week in the MLB Draft, Jared James (McClatchy) of
the South squad was still smiling as he loves playing the game.

Rear View Mirror Notes (6/10/12)
|

Lefthander Logan James last night pitched for the last time in a Jesuit uniform.
Next time, he'll be wearing Stanford Cardinal colors.
|
In addition to the line score above, several things stand out about last night's performances
(in no particular):
Jared James (McClatchy) striking out on a pitch in the dirt, then taking off
for first with a flameburst, the catcher's throw wide of the mark, and Jared racing around second,
ending up at third on a K. Make that A-OK.
Diminutive Mykhel Lee (Grant)
cracking two hits, scooting around the bases and resurrecting the famous Lee family name
(he's the nephew of Leron and Leon and cousin to Derrek, recently retired).
North's Shaun Mize (Woodcreek) hitting the ball hard each
time; the kid's a natural born hitter and we like his future at Nevada.
Similarly, Josh Pigg (Franklin) who smacked a liner up the
middle (see above) on his second at-bat. The Indians selected him in this week's draft
for his moundwork. We can only wonder what he'd do at the plate in the pros.
Anthony Gonsolin (Vacaville High) showed why his school ended
up in the prep playoffs. Kid can rake and plays shortstop very smoothly for a big
guy.
Pitcher Sutter McLoughlin came in throwing nice and easy
country hardball. Kid already looks like a college pitcher in size and speed, and we can't
wait to see him starting for Reggie Christiansen's Hornet nine next
spring.
Several guys were asked to play out of position last night, none more so than
Davis' Chris Gnos, normally an outfielder for the Blue Devils, who took at
least one in the sternum while trying to tamper hot smashes toward second base (Imagine
reporting to work and having to type on the computer only using chopsticks).
Congrats to the Optimist Club for continuing the tradition of celebrating the
top senior high school talent in the Valley despite the venue change to McAuliffe Field
Complex and new competition from the Raley Field Showcase staged one week prior.
