With the first ever All-Capitol Team selected by BaseballSacramento.com we celebrate the best of the best: one player for each position on the field, plus one utility player, just like "the good ol' days," offers Mark McDermott, formerly of the Bee, who compiled our player's stats and helped organize this first-ever initiative.
During our team photo shoot, when we suggested to Jesuit's Joe Potulny, our Coach of the Year, "Wouldn't it be great to play an All-Star game with these guys?" his eyes lit up at the possibilities. Yes, we'd like our chances with this ultimate "travel-ball" team.

A few players, like our Most Valuable Player J.D. Davis of Elk Grove, were consensus first-team selections. Due to the exclusivity of this squad, however, we faced several very tough choices. And some of those players landed on our 2nd or 3rd Teams. We also selected All-Division Teams. The links are found below.

And so, we tip our caps to the "Cream of the Crop" that graced Sacramento Valley ballyards in 2011.

We also give a nod to all those other players who weren't selected All-Conference, or All-League and didn't bat over .400, yet gave their all to teammates and coaches in testing their limits to become as good as they probably ever will be on the diamond.

Over the course of this high school season, one thing stood out to this reporter: good, clean sportsmanship. We saw it across the board; a testament to the fine coaching and strong parenting enjoyed by the ballplayers  in this region.

Kudos as well to the umpires who, for the most part, did their jobs well, which is to fade into the background like green camouflage, while ensuring the game is played under the rules.

And speaking of camouflage, we're not sure what to say about the blue "camo" jerseys worn by Rocklin, except that they rolled through the playoffs while wearing them, right up to the D-2 Championship game, when the Roseville Tigers—led  by the Blaser brothers—stole their Thunder.

Finally, we would like to express our appreciation to the Sacramento River Cats for opening their Raley Field facility to our All-Capitol Team photo shoot, and for providing the excellent photographic services of staffer Sara Molina, the Cats' publication designer and photographer.

We look forward to next spring, when the future crop of baseball talent will shine throughout the 2012 season, and provide an opportunity to select the next All-Capitol Team.

Statistical Criteria

In selecting the players to the All-Capitol Teams, only regular season statistics were considered. We did not consider playoff statistics to maintain
an "apples-to-apples" selection criteria.
